In October 2016 My Music, My Manchester brought together over 30 aspiring young musicians aged 13-18 from the city’s communities in a musical celebration of Manchester's diversity and its rich, modern culture.
Led by internationally renowned musician and cultural activist Meklit, the group created a new five-piece song-cycle using sounds of the city and their place within it as inspiration, exploring questions of home, place, city, belonging and identity.
The performance, which premiered at the BBC Philharmonic Studio in Salford, revealed ‘the voice of Manchester’ by combining music, film and digital art.
My Music, My Manchester was a MyHub project, coordinated by Brighter Sound in collaboration with Manchester Camerata and with support from Music Action International, Z-Arts, One Education, Band on the Wall, RNCM and the BBC Philharmonic.
Funded by Arts Council England, Manchester City Council, MyHub and Youth Music.
