Afro Energy with Karen Nyame KG

In May 2023 12 artists joined “Goddess of Rhythm” Karen Nyame KG in the studio to produce brand new Afrocentric club tunes.

Across five days at NQ House in Manchester the group worked together to explore Afro Club and all of its hybrids, with guest workshops from Fiyahdred, Ikonika and Gina Jeanz to support their collaborative and music making processes.

At the end of the week we hosted a listening party where they debuted their culture-shifting grooves. Watch this video, and make sure the sound is on, for a taste…

We’re planning to release the tunes in their entirety in the near future. Till then, read and hear more about the artists. Collectively the group dabbles in all sorts of sounds. From UK Funky, Afrobeat and Amapiano to Jazz, Hip Hop and Scouse House (yup, you read that right).

So how did people find the residency?

Electronic music producer and composer SCAPA said “I was challenged as a producer in a way that made me realise how much more capable I am at collaboration than I thought, so this residency will stay with me forever. No notes!”

We love to hear it!

DJ and artist GAROËSS adds “Big up to KG for being so real and raw throughout the week. Seeing someone you rate so highly as a DJ/Producer being the creative producer for a programme like this and unapologetically being themselves and sharing their journey really made it easier to share and collaborate with others. It really set the tone.”

We definitely share that sentiment, and thank KG and everyone else involved for bringing their authenticity to the space to make such a special project.
