Across 2025 we collaborated with Rochdale Connections Trust to deliver music-making workshops for young people aged 11-18.

Over five months they worked with professional musicians to create original new music inspired by the things they're passionate about. One of these songs, The Station, particularly shone out and in August we took a group of the young people to VoltaLab to get the track professionally recorded, mixed and mastered.

Brighter Sound · The Station (VoltaLab Session)
  • The Station came to life really quickly! Facilitators Phill and Nyree started by playing different chords and progressions, asking the young people to think about the vibes they were picking up. The vibes became words, and suddenly the first line and melody were created. These formed the basis of the whole song.

The group then dug deeper into the narrator, following her perspective at the station. Who was she? How was she feeling? What was she waiting for? They decided that the song should take listeners on a journey to create a feeling of movement and progression, lyrically in the story as well as sonically (like a train building momentum!).

In the end the group decided to leave the narrator’s feeling of uncertainty unresolved yet hopeful, allowing the listener to make the call on where the story goes next.

  • Verse 1

    Her eyes sparkle with admiration
Her heart waits at the central station
Sitting there but she can't keep waiting
on a train that will never come

    Verse 2

    Her head is heavy
    Her mind keeps racing
Watching the people around her pacing
Everyone’s got a dream their chasing
    But time is running out

    Chorus

    I wonder
Do they even know what it feels like
To be broken and accompanied by
The demons you try to hide

    Verse 3

    Her hands are shaken
    Her chest is tightening
    Something deep inside is rising
    Her emotions strike light lightning
    Now she’s ready to fight

    Chorus

    I wonder
Do they even know what it feels like
To be broken and accompanied by
The demons you try to hide

    Bridge

    Will I ever find myself
    Will we ever meet again
Will it ever be the same

    Chorus x 2
