A three-part series supporting young creatives (aged 16-25) to build sustainable careers in music, covering songwriting, building an audience and selling your music.

Topics have been shaped in collaboration with partners from further, higher and alternative education providers across the city.

First Steps is part of BRITs Fringe 2026.

Spaces are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis, so be quick!

  • An early-evening event for early-career and developing songwriters, focused on the craft, process, and realities of writing music today.

    Featuring conversations with experts, a sharing of original new music and a social mixer to encourage future connections and collaborations.

    Contributors include representatives from Stellar Songs and Lab Records, and songwriters Holly Phelps and David O’Dowda.

    Aimed at musicians, writers, producers, and performers who want to explore songwriting as a professional career path.

    In partnership with The Manchester College

  • A full-day event exploring how to grow and sustain audiences – both onstage and online – and progress from local gigs to wider touring and festival opportunities.

    Plus a listening and feedback panel offering guidance on your current promotional approaches.

    Contributors include Chris Horkan (Hey! Manchester), Conrad Murray (SJM), Sunjay Kohli (AAA Media), Faye Williams (Flabbergast), Scott Lewis (EMI North), and representatives from Blackstar Agency.

    Aimed at artists, bands, and producers who are performing live or preparing to do so.

    In partnership with the School of Digital Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University

  • A practical day focused on understanding the business and legal sides of music careers, and how to take ownership of monetising your work.

    The day will include “Ask the Expert” breakout sessions covering publishing, sync and licensing, legal, and distribution.

    Industry experts will include Matt Johnson (Tristar Records), Corbyn Asbury (YouTube), Dan Jones (PRS for Music), Esme O’Keefe (Modern Sky), and representatives from TuneCore, Universal Music Group and Sony Music.

    Aimed at artists, songwriters, composers and producers who are already creating or releasing music.
